Developed by Brazilian theatre practitioner Augusto Boal, the Theatre of the Oppressed is an interactive, physical and playful tool used to investigate situations in which we are denied our basic rights, personally and collectively. Theatre of the Oppressed NYC works with local communities to establish “popular theatre troupes” throughout the five boroughs. Community actors, directors, playwrights, designers and producers create original, interactive plays inspired by real-life struggles for human rights. The popular troupes tour throughout varied communities to engage in theatrical brainstorming or “forum theatre.” These interactive forums demand solidarity amongst diverse New Yorkers and creatively challenge systems of oppression.
Concrete Justice is a collective of homeless and formerly homeless actors and artists in New York City. They utilize the methodology of Theatre of the Oppressed for communal problem-solving around the issues of homelessness, joblessness, and related discrimination.
Katy Rubin, Founding Artistic Director of Theatre of the Oppressed NYC, is a facilitator, director, actor and circus artist. She has led Forum Theatre workshops and created performances with various communities including NYC public school students and teachers; homeless adults and youth; LGBT homeless teens; people living with HIV/AIDS; recent immigrants; women’s leadership institutes; and refugees. She has trained in Rio de Janeiro and Kolkata, India, collaborated with Combatants for Peace in Israel and Palestine, and directed forum plays in Leon, Nicaragua.
