Tzedakah: Giving and Spending Ethically
Talking about money is often uncomfortable, but it doesn’t have to be. Pursue promotes an open and thoughtful dialogue about how we earn, spend, and donate our financial resources–a vital part of the equation in making change (pun intended). After all, if the billionaires can do it, we social justice change-makers can surely define where our values and money intersect!
Where Do You Give? is a new project of American Jewish World Service that invites all of us who seek to engage more deeply with our communities—be they geographic, ethnic, national or other— in thoughtful conversation about where we give, to whom and why.
Ethical Consumption
There are many ways you can put your purchasing power toward verified sustainable companies. Here are some of our favorite resources for intentional spending through Fair Trade (what’s that?):
- Better Beans. Purchase fair trade coffee, tea, and chocolate through this partnership between American Jewish World Service and Equal Exchange
- Global Goods Partners. Buy handmade crafts produced by women through community based organizations, and support sustainable livelihoods and women’s empowerment in developing countries
- Fair Trade Judaica. Obtain Jewish ritual items and other products and promote the value of ethical consumption within the Jewish community
